Jan Bremmer (Groningen), The Myth of Danae and Perseus between Narrative and Ritual: the Local and the Global

ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗ

In my lecture, I will try to analyse the oldest stages of the Danae and Perseus myth, that is, the version (s) of the fifth century and older. I will pay attention to reflections of ritual in the myth and the nature of these reflections as well as to narrative aspects of the myth. I will also discuss its combination of a precise local aspect with the much more global episodes of the myth. Finally, in my analysis I will pay attention to both the literary and visual aspects of the tradition of the myth.
