Biographical note

Ioannis Galeridis was born in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1962. He completed his undergraduate studies (1985) at the School of Philosophy of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and earned a Ph.D. degree in History of Art (1991) from the same institution (The Faculty of History and Archaeology).

1991-1995: Freelance arts writer; collaboration with the Athens publishing houses Ekdotike Athenon and Melissa.

1995-2016: He worked at the Modern Greek Art Research Office of the Academy of Athens; he created its infrastructure and its collection of art historical books. Scientific responsible and editor of the Modern Greek Art Research Office Publications series.

2016- present: Researcher at the Research Centre for Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Art of the Academy of Athens.

Research interests: Classical mythology in the arts, public outdoor sculpture, secular painting of the Ottoman period (18th and 19th centuries).

Research activity

Since 1995, he is conducting Academy of Athens research projects on public sculpture with the aim of making a survey of 19th-21th century public monuments and sculpture in Greece. It is the first ever comprehensive survey of Greece’s outdoor sculpture. The result of his fieldwork is the Public Sculpture Archive, a collection containing more than 2.200 entries of public monuments and sculptures, which is still under way.

Since 2017 he is also conducting the Academy of Athens research project “Inventory of the Inscriptions of the City of Athens (modern period)”.
