Biographical note

Elisabeth Kontogiorgi, born in Thessaloniki (12 December 1958), is Director of Research at the Modern Greek History Research Centre of the Academy of Athens. She graduated from the Philosophical School of the Aristoteleion University of Thessaloniki with a degree (B.A.) in classics and philosophy (1981). She attended the postgraguate seminars on modern history at the same university from 1981 to 1983. She continued her studies at the Department of Modern History, University of Glasgow (MPhil 1988) and gained her DPhil in Μodern Ηistory from St Antony’s College, University of Oxford (1997).

She taught, as associate lecturer, economic and social history at the Harokopeion University of Athens, Department of Geography from 2000 to 2003. From 1996 to 1998 and from 2001 to 2002 she worked at the Modern Greek History Research Centre, Academy of Athens and in 2003 she was elected Research Fellow at this Institution. During this period she was also an external collaborator in various national research projects. She has worked at the Greek General State Archives (Athens) from 1991 to 1993 and in 1995. She has also taught Classics, Modern Greek, and History at several private and public secondary schools in Greece and in Melbourne. In 1985 she was appointed as high-school teacher in the Ministry of Education.

She specializes in modern Greece and Inter-war Europe, population movements in the Balkans, the Macedonian question, refugee resettlement in Greece and the role of international organizations, social and economic history in rural areas during the interwar period, the social policy of the League of Nations, and in the ecclesiastical history of the nineteenth century.

At the Modern Greek History Research Centre she is currently running two projects: one based on the Archive of Alexander Lykourgos (1827-1875), Archbishop of Syros and Tenos and concerning the movement of reunion between the Anglican and the Eastern Orthodox Churches in the 1860s and 1870s and its ideological, political and diplomatic dimensions. The second project regards the social policy of the League of Nations in Greece and focuses on the public health sector.

Teaching

She taught, as associate lecturer, economic and social history at the Harokopeion University of Athens, Department of Geography from 2000 to 2003
