Biographical note

Applied Engineering Sciences [Statics – Dynamics – Structural Research]    (1999)

He was born in Athens in 1937. MSc in Civil Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) (1962), PhD of NTUA (1970) and Full Professor of Statics & Steel Bridges of NTUA (1982). Director of the Section of Structures (1984-1986) and Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Program of Civil Engineering (1998-2004). President of the Committee of Postgraduate Studies of Civil Engineering of NTUA (1998-2004). Visiting Professor of European and USA Universities. Member of  7 foreign Academies: Academia Europaea (1992), Serbian Academy of Sciences & Arts (1997), Russian Academy of Engineering (RAACS,2000), International Academy of Engineering (Moscow, 2010), New York Academy of Sciences (Fellow, 1995), European Academy of Sciences (Liège, 2010), European Academy of Sciences & Arts (Saltsburg, 2011). Doctorate Honoris Causa of the Universities: Nis (Serbia, 2006), Democritus University of Thrace (DUT) (2007), Novi Sad (Serbia, 2013). Member of the Board of Trustees of DUT (2011-2016). Vice –President (2017) and President (2018) of the Academy of Athens, Vice -President of the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens (2016-2021).
Research areas, work ,recognition: Nonlinear (initial/boundary value) problems of static/dynamic instability of conservative and non-conservative systems, chaos and other phenomena, catastrophe theory, optimum solution of the stability of statues on the top of multi-spondyle columns. He published more than 300 papers in international journals and conference proceedings, many books in Greek and English. His research has been highly recognized by well-known researchers. Guest editor of three special issues of journals (Intern. J. Non-Linear Mechanics 2002 & 2007 και Meccanica 2014).  Editor/Co-editor of the journals “The Open Mechanics” and “Facta Universitätis”. Invited lecturer in various Universities (Brown, Georgia Inst. Tech., Delft, Hamburg, Caltech, etc), and in foreign Academies (Serbian, Irish, Polish, Russian, etc). President of the Hellenic Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (Honorary President in 2014) and the Research Society of Metal Structures. Founder of the European series of conferences EURODYN and EUROSTEEL, President of the EURODYN Conferences 1990 & 1993 and EUROSTEEL 1995. President of the Sessions on stability of the World Conferences in Mechanics - IUTAM (1988, 1992, 2000) and the Steering Committee of the EUROSTEEL Conferences, 1995-2011. Vice- President of the National Advisory Board of Research & Technology (1992-1994), Vice-President (1993-2000) and President (2000-now) of the Technical Council of the Academy of Athens. Designer and consultant of large technical works. Founder of the first Greek industry of ready mixed concrete (ET-BETON). Honorary President of the Hellenic Society of Linguistic Heritage and Honorary Member of literature/cultural societies [Literary Society “Parnassos” , National Society of Greek Writers , Society of Greek Philologists , Society of Cycladique Studies,etc].
 Awards, honors: Blaise Pascal Medal in Engineering of the European Academy of Sciences (2010), Honorary issue of the journal Archives of Applied Mechanics (2012), Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to Dynamic Stability (ICCES, 2012), Honorary Volume of  NTUA (2005), Distinguished Lecturer Award from Caltech (2014). Honorary citizen of foreign and Greek cities. Grand Archon (Master of the Law) awarded by the Patriarch and Pope of Alexandria & Whole Africa (2012). State distinctions: Golden Cross of the order of Phoenix, Golden Cross of the Higher Commanders of the Order of King George A’ and Higher Commander of the Οrder of Honor awarded by the President of the Hellenic Democracy (2014).
 Other activities: Champion in discus throwing (1951-1967): National, Mediterranean, Balkan, 5th world discus thrower in 1959. The National Union of Athletic Journalists proclaimed him in 1959 as the best athlete of Greece among athletes of all sports. President of SEGAS (National Federation of Athletic Societies) which in 1994 awarded him with the Distinction of Excellence (Aristio) for his contribution in sports.  President of Ethnikos Gymnasticos  Syllogos of Athens (2005-2015).

He is an ordinary member of the Academy of Athens since 1999.
