ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗ

The paper deals with various ways in which myth, literature, and cult have been used and combined in scholarly constructions of the god Dionysos in the period since the publication in 1872 of Nietzsche's Geburt der Tragödie and Adolf Rapp's "Die Mänade im griechischen Cultus, in der Kunst und Poesie." Primary attention is given to Walter Otto's Dionysos: Mythos und Kultus (1933), E. R. Dodds's edition of Euripides Bacchae (1944, 2^ndedition 1960), and Richard Seaford's Dionysos (2006), but there will be glances at the earlier work of Nietzsche, Rapp, Rohde, Harrison, Wilamowitz, and Nilsson and the later 20th-century work of Burkert, Vernant, Detienne, and in particular Albert Henrichs.
