Περίληψη / Abstract
How well does Euclid’s Elements fit the description of a science that we find in Aristotle’s Posterior Analytics?
There are many formal features that correspond, including the stratification of propositions into first principles and theorems and the presence of definitions and common axioms amongst the first principles. However, there are several features which do not correspond, including Euclid’s postulates, and the presence of the infamous ‘geometrical problems’.
I focus on the construction postulates and problems, and argue that the role of construction poses a significant obstacle to identifying the Elements as an Aristotelian demonstrative science.
